| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NEW WEBSITE REPLACES GOSSIPING AT THE WATER COOLER Wilmington, NC (5/6/08) - Move over water cooler - a new web site, GossipReport.com, has taken workplace gossip to the web, allowing co-workers to gossip anonymously about one another and their company in a section of the site reserved for workplace banter. "Gossip can be productive and it definitely has a place at work," explains Elizabeth Bloch, co-creator and Director of Media Relations for the site. "GossipReport.com is just a better way to do what everybody already does," claims Bloch. Earlier this year the New York Times published an article by Eilene Zimmerman about gossip at work entitled, Gossip Is Information by Another Name. The article included commentary from various academic sources. An evolutionary biologist stated, "It [gossip] can give you a leg up because it tends to be surprisingly accurate. A company newsletter will never replace gossip, because you get much more and better information from gossip." The article also included a statement from a research psychologist and professor of organizational behavior who said, "Gossip is your workplace radar, keeping you abreast of changes at the company, even if there is no official communication about them. You can use that information to your advantage." The professor continued "... it can actually be good for the company." GossipReport.com allows users to anonymously gossip about anyone they choose. The site allows users to vote on gossip and authors of gossip, remove "trashy" gossip, and even provides a mechanism to rate people in three categories: personality, looks and in bed. Bloch commented, "This is what people talk about at work - GossipReport.com has taken the water cooler online." "GossipReport.com is a place for users to talk about people and events in their lives. We spend most of our lives at work - it makes sense that we gossip about what happens there," says Bloch. She further claims the mission of GossipReport.com is to raise the level of conversation and hopes to teach people how to gossip constructively.
